VA Aid and Attendance Benefits for Veterans and Surviving Spouses
Many wartime veterans and surviving spouses are unaware that they may qualify for a valuable tax-free benefit through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs known as Aid and Attendance (A&A).
Aid and Attendance is an enhanced VA pension benefit that can provide substantial monthly financial assistance to help offset the cost of:
Assisted living
Memory care
Independent living (when personal care services are included)
In-home care
Skilled nursing care
For many families, this benefit can make senior care significantly more affordable.
Potential 2026 Monthly Benefit Amounts
Eligible applicants may receive up to the following maximum monthly amounts in 2026:
Surviving Spouse: up to $1,558 per month
Single Veteran: up to $2,424 per month
Married Veteran: up to $2,874 per month
Two Veterans Married to Each Other: up to $3,845 per month
These benefits are generally tax-free and can provide meaningful assistance toward the cost of long-term care.
Who May Qualify?
You or your spouse may be eligible if:
The veteran served during a recognized wartime period
The veteran received a discharge other than dishonorable
The applicant requires assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, medication management, or mobility
Income and net worth requirements are met
Surviving spouses of eligible veterans may also qualify even after the veteran has passed away.
How the Benefit Works
Aid and Attendance is a needs-based pension. The actual amount received depends on several factors, including:
Household income
Assets and net worth
Unreimbursed medical expenses
Marital status
Level of care needed
Many families are surprised to learn that expenses for assisted living, memory care, and home care can significantly reduce countable income and improve eligibility.
